Death toll in Kintampo accident reaches 71

The death toll in yesterday’s gory accident on the Kintampo-Tamale road keeps increasing. So far a total of 71 persons have been confirmed dead.

According to the Police, 43 died on the spot. Several others died on the way to hospital whilst some lost the survival fight on admission at various hospitals. About 10 more people died Thursday morning, TV3’s Brong Ahafo regional correspondent Johnson Kofi Takyi gathered.

Meanwhile, family members are finding it extremely difficult to identify their dead due to how they have been arranged in the morgue and also the severity of the injury leaving some of them disfigured, Johnson observed.

The bus had collided with an oncoming cargo truck with registration number AS 1514-15 near the Kintampo Water Falls. The truck was carrying tomatoes from Navrongo to Kumasi.

Police say some people inclduing children of less than three months were taken to the Kintampo, Techiman and Sunyani hospitals for treatment.

The Kintampo Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Desmond Owusu Boapong told Onua FM’s Yen Sempa host Kwame Karikari on Thursday that he had a call between 6pm and 7pm that an accident had occured around the Kintampo Waterfalls junction in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Chief Supt. Owusu Boampong said on reaching the accident scene, the situation was overwhelming so he had to call the fire service to join the operation.

He said they had to cut the buses into pieces before they could retrieve the dead and 15 elderly people and 8 children who survived.

He said the police are investigating the accident.

Meanwhile, the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Justice Samuel Adjei, has visited the hospitals where the victims are receiving treatment as well as the morgues.

The Health Minister, Alex Segbefia was said to be on his way to the region.
