Pro-NDC group, Young Professionals has ridiculed president Akufo-Addo’s fight against corruption, accusing him of clearing every corruption that comes to his attention without proper investigations. The New Patriotic Party, Prior to the 2016 general election campaigned vigorously against what it described as endemic corruption  in the John Dramani Mahama Administration. The then opposition party promised to go all lengths to tackle the problem. But about 15 months in office, the Akufo-Addo Administration has come under scrutiny over its handling of corruption related matters. Ghana dropped 11 places from the 2016 ranking to place 81 out of 180 countries in the 2017 Corruption Perception index. Addressing a news conference on Wednesday, May 9, Young Professionals said, “The President has taken onto himself, the duties of a clearing agent, clearing every allegation of corruption brought to his attention.” According to the group, the president has always been quick in clearing the individuals involved in the BOST contaminated fuel saga of any wrongdoing. “As we speak, though an investigation is said to have been launched into the contaminated oil scandal, no report whatsoever, is out in the public.” The group also made reference to Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko’s appearance before Parliament sometime in 2017 to answer to questions with regards to the BOST scandal where the minister stated that a committee was set up to look into the matter. “Parliament requested to see minutes of the said committee’s meeting. As we speak, no such request has been honored to the best of our knowledge.” The NDC group also made mention of the corruption allegation against the two deputy chiefs of staff, the CID boss among other corruption allegations that the NPP government has had to deal with. According to the group, despite all these, President Akufo-Addo’s administration continues to tout its anti-corruption credentials, particularly with the setting up of the special prosecutor’s office despite criticisms.
