“We are going to have a sit-down strike on 31st of this month and we want all our brothers from the north to the south, east and west to know that on that day no car should come out. We are sitting down for one-week if nothing is being done about the insurance issue” that’s according to William Adaquah, Secretary of the association.
Chairman of the association, Charles Danso, says it will oppose any increment of more than 100 percent in the insurance premium considering the economic hardships Ghanaians are going through.
“We use to pay Ghc70 only for them to increase to Ghc350 which is too harsh. When our cars crash we normally fix them by ourselves”.
The association again lamented that new policies of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, DVLA, are unbearable.
“We are not happy with the DVLA’s introduction of the compulsory driving school because those who teach there do not even teach how to drive caterpillar, other huge vehicles as well as our type of cars known locally as the ‘trotro'”.
The association has thus asked the DVLA to organize refresher courses for drivers to reduce road crashes.
The commercial drivers embarked on a similar strike action few months back when the decision to increase the insurance premium was first announced.
The action left commuters stranded for hours but was quickly called off after an intervention by the Ministry of transport and other stakeholders in the transport sector.

The Ghana Committed Drivers Association has threatened to embark on a seven day sit down strike from August 31, following a 400 percent increase in insurance premium for commercial vehicles.
