Chokosis in Kumasi call for peace in Chereponi

The Chokosi community in the Tafo suburb of Kumasi has called for an end to the conflict at Chereponi in the North East Region. The group described the current disturbances as unpleasant as the Chokosis and Konkombas have stayed as family for centuries. They have called for truce between the two tribes for the development of Chereponi. Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, the group called on both the Chokosis and Konkombas to settle their differences devoid of violence. They also want government’s intervention to bring lasting end to the conflict. “We Chokosis and our neighbours Konkombas have lived together for more than 300 years and we have been living peacefully. We even have inter-tribal marriages so we don’t see any reason why we should fight against each other. “We are therefore calling on the government to see to it that the conflict comes to an end immediately and find a lasting solution to it,” leader of the Chokosi community, Alhaji Iddris Zakaria, noted. Spokesperson for the Anufo Progressive Union, Abdul Samed Tanko, said peace must prevail for Chereponi to also have its fair share of development. “We want our homeland to be attractive to investors to create more job opportunities to the youth. But the conflict happening at the moment will definitely scare investors from coming to Chereponi. We want the Konkombas to advise themselves and we (Chokosis) will also advise ourselves for peace to prevail. We just need peace to get development.” Renewed clashes between Chokosis and Konkombas last week has so far claimed three lives. Several houses have been torched, leading to the displacement of over 1,000 residents.
