China President Xi Jinping has expressed shock at the news of the loss of over 150 lives to a fire and flood disaster in Accra last week.

“I was shocked and regretted at the huge casualties caused by the explosion of a fuel station in Accra,” President Jinping said in a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Accra.

The twin disaster led to the declaration of a three-day national mourning with a memorial service held in Accra on Wednesday, June 10 to climax the consoling of victims and bereaved families.

“On behalf of the Chinese government and people as well as in my own name, I would like to extend deep condolence to the victims, and sincere sympathy to the injured and the bereaved families,” the statement said.

Though not the most intense in Ghana according to meteorologists, Wednesday’s rains flooded most parts of the capital city with the casualties increased by an explosion at a Goil Filling Station near the Kwame Nkumah Circle.
