Change Advocates, a group of seven (7) students studying MSc. Development Management under the Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), organized a project at Rev. Obli Foundation, at Nsawam-Sakyikrom.
The project which constituted a health screening exercise, registration onto the National Health Insurance Scheme, and donation of items to the orphanage, the aged and vulnerable in the town and its environs, took place on Friday, January 20, 2023 under the theme: “A Journey Committed to Care”.
A medical team present screened all beneficiaries for various sicknesses and medical conditions, whilst officials from the NHIS registered them on the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Doctor Paa Kwesi of E&E Medical Centre located in Adenta encouraged the beneficiaries, especially the aged, to seek prompt medical care and visit the hospital regularly.
The medical team engaged them on health tit-bits, which included the risk of self-medication, importance of personal hygiene and the need for undergoing regular check-up at the hospital. Officials from the Nsawam National Health Insurance office also emphasized the need for beneficiaries to register onto the scheme and renew their cards annually to avoid any future mishap.
In addition, the Change Advocate team took the children through a career guidance session and urged them to take their education serious so they can live meaningful and fulfilled lives in future. Reiterating that point, Mr Ebenezer Abrokwah, a member of Change Advocates, challenged them to live a morally upright life since they were expected to be the moral compass of society.
Afterwards, the Change Advocate team presented items comprised of educational materials, clothes, liquid soaps, floor cleaners, tissues, detergents, boxes of water, packs of drinks and a cake to the orphanage.
Presenting the items, Mr Bright Ampadu Okyere, a member of the Change Advocate team explained that the gesture formed part of their academic work in which they were to identify a social intervention need in a community, design a plan, and execute it efficiently to bring relief to the affected community.
The focus of the group was to demonstrate commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG3 – Good Health and Well-being and SDG4 – Quality Education.
At the end of the project, the Change Advocate team expressed gratitude to the orphanage for allowing them to impact positively the lives of the children, the aged and the vulnerable at Nsawam Sakyikrom. They appreciated the immense support they received from sponsors such as Shalina Healthcare for donating drugs to support the event, Just Care for providing all the educational materials, Creative Me, Sel Bakery for the cake, Ellys soaps and detergents, Radius Marketing, JINS Savings and Loans and other individual philanthropists who supported in diverse ways.
Receiving the items on behalf of the orphanage, Mrs. Felicia Obli expressed her pleasure and sincere gratitude for the kind gesture extended to them. She promised to continuously take very good care of the children as that is the passion and contribution of Rev. David Sowatey Obli and herself to the collective good of society. The children at the orphanage expressed their appreciation to the delegation from Change Advocates by singing and dancing heartily for the group. The aged and affected beneficiaries were all full of joy and described the project as one of the best health support they had received in the community.
