In achieving this, CENSTERM engaged 15 Assemblymen who represent their respective communities to lead the tree planting activity with support from CENSTERM officials.
Through the efforts of the assemblymen, community members including chiefs, elders and school children were mobilized to undertake the activity.
This initiative, the first of its kind in the District, was realized through the efforts of the Centre led by the Project Coordinator, Daniel Asafra Tibu.
Mr Tibu indicated that the activity was realized as a result of the collaboration established between CENSTERM and VRA.
According to him, the district has suffered deforestation and degradation of the environment through charcoal burning and for fuelwood over the past decades.
These have contributed to loss of biodiversity and destruction of the ecosystem in the district.
He was therefore of the view that the initiative by CENSTERM would contribute to the restoration of forest cover, reduction of carbon emissions and fixation of ecosystem services.
He further elaborated that his organization envisions to green the district not only through tree planting programmes but other sustainable and innovative ways with respect agriculture, waste management lifestyle in various towns and villages in the district.
These actions he believed would support livelihoods of people and contribute to the fight against climate change to reduce global warming.
Some of the beneficiary communities include Tongor-Dzemeni, Tongor-Tsanakpe, Kaira-Kpalime, Kpeve, Todome-Kpalime, Peki-Dzake, Peki-Avetile, and Kpalime-Duga.
