Capt Mahama receives posthumous promotion to Major

Captain, now Major, Maxwell Adam Mahama[/caption] The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has conferred a posthumous promotion on Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama, who was lynched at Denkyira-Obuasi virtually in the line of duty. Captain Mahama was promoted to Major in the Forces. The promotion was announced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, June 5 when he visited the family to condole with them. The President announced a GH¢500,000 trust fund from the state for the wife and children of the deceased army captain. The Defence Minister will chair the committee of trustees for the fund. President Akufo-Addo also doled out a personal GH¢50,000 towards the funeral, which is scheduled to be held on Friday, June 9. The fallen soldier will have a state burial to be attended Vice President Mahamdudu Bawumia, who will be acting as President then, and top government functionaries. A monument will also be erected in his honour. Major Mahama was lynched by a mob at Denkyira-Obuasi while on his morning jogging from Diaso, the capital of Upper Dekyira West District, where he was stationed as Commander of a military detachment against illegal mining. He was mistaken for an armed robber at Denkyira-Obuasi, initial reports suggested. His upper body was torched. Forty-four persons have been arrested in connection with the murder with 41 remanded in police custody.
