Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Haruna Iddrisu has described the withdrawal of out-patient services by doctors as illegal, saying it is an attempt to compel government to negotiate under duress.

Public sector doctors, most of whom are members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), on Thursday, July 30 initiated moves to resign en masse – as warned months earlier – by withdrawing services at out-patient departments 9OPDs) of government health facilities.

They had complained of not having proper conditions of service, threatening to go the full haul on a roadmap reached at an extraordinary meeting.

But a statement issued by the Employment Minister on Monday, August 3 indicted the doctors, claiming they had declared strike against labour laws as negotiations were ongoing.

“Government is of the view that while these processes are on-going, it is unfair and against the rules of labour practice for the GMA to declare a partial strike by withdrawing all outpatient services.

“This amounts to coercion and an attempt to compel Government to negotiate under duress.”

Mr Iddrisu is, therefore, asking doctors to return to work “with immediate effect”.

“The current withdrawal of services is illegal and Government calls on the GMA to call of the partial strike with immediate effect.”
