The MoFA, in a press release cautioned the public to buy live birds direct from the poultry farms or from recognized vendors at their sales point or risk buying infected birds.
The Veterinary Services of the ministry, as part of control measures restricted the movements of live birds, especially cockerels and pullets in the country, after the outbreak of the Avian Influenza, popularly known as Bird Flu in May, this year in Obuasi.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, madam Hannah Bissiw has said “the importance of what happened is the ban that we have placed because if this trader was moving around with those birds, the flu would have spread.
“The droppings of affected birds carry the active virus so we don’t want people moving around with their birds”, she said.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture however assured the public that efforts are being made to get the Veterinary Services to check on the conditions at the various markets where poultry and poultry products are sold.
Over 3,600 birds from two farms in Denu and Keta in the Volta Region have being destroyed so far by the Directorate due to infections on the farms.
About 2000 birds have also been destroyed from a farm at Obuasi in the Ashanti region Where the outbreak of the influenza was first detected.
