The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has said that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was the one who proposed the Emission Levy to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He says the IMF agreed with Dr Bawumia to implement the levy.
Sammy Gyamfi wondered why Dr Bawumia would now turn around and complain about taxes and propose to abolish some.
“He proposed the Emission levy IMF and the IMF agreed with him,” Sammy Gyamfi said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday Febraury 10.
Sammy Gyamfi Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cannot mislead Ghanaians again as he did in 2016 and 2020.
He accused Dr Bawumia of peddling falsehood in 2016 and in 2020 and got away with it to win the elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but cannot do that this time around.
“It is very laughable that our friends in the NPP and Bawumia think that they can once again hoodwink the people with lies.
“Ghanaians are wide awake. The days when Bawumia could get away with his lectures as we saw in opposition which were full of lies, are gone. He got away with it in 2016 and in 2020, but they will not be third time lucky in 2024. The whole propaganda that he was the economic Messiah, and he had the magic wand has been exposed.
“The people have no confidence and trust in Bawumia, his people are faced with the challenge of marketing a candidate who is a chronic liar,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 on Saturday, February 10 while reacting to the address delivered by Dr Bawumia.
Prior to Sammy Gyamfi’s submission, Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, an aide to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, said his boss’ vision had engaged the entire country in a discourse of ideas capable of transforming the country.
In his view, the conversation should be based on ideas to grow the country and that is what Dr Bawumia has been doing over the years.
Dr Bawumia had stated categorically that he would abolish the tax on electronic financial transactions, e-levy, if elected President of Ghana.
The controversial tax was introduced in 2022, and prior to the introduction, Vice President Bawumia had declared his opposition to levies on electronic financial transactions in an interview.
Delivering his first major address to the nation after his election as NPP flagbearer, during which he gave broad policy outlines of a Bawumia Presidency, Dr. Bawumia minced no words in declaring his opposition to taxes on electronic financial transactions, declaring that he will abolish e-levy as President.
“To move towards a cashless economy, however, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payment.
“To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will, therefore, be abolished,” he declared at the UPSA auditorium on February 7.
Speaking on the Key Points on TV3 on Saturday February 10, Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, said “he has gotten the whole country to engage in discourse bordering on ideas capable of transforming our nations, the conversation should be based on ideas and that is how he has done over the years.”
