The Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia, has commiserated with the family of the late Adams Mahama, former Upper East regional chairman of the NPP, ahead of his burial on Saturday.
Dr. Bawumia, who is already in Bolgatanga, was in the company of the First National Vice Chairman Freddie Blay and other notable personalities in the NPP.
They met with representatives of Mr. Mahama’s family to inform them of their readiness to support in the burial rites.
They also informed the family of their unflinching support going forward.
Dr. Bawumia used the occasion to reiterate his call on party followers to remain calm in honour of the late party stalwart whiles the police investigates the matter.
Dr. Bawumia has already stated that the acid-attack on Alhaji Mahama that led to his shocking death Thursday morning, is an ”attack on the NPP”, and expressed the hope that the perpetrators would be brought to book.
The deceased was to be buried Friday in line with Islamic tradition, but that was postponed to Saturday in anticipation of the party’s Flagbearer, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, who has cancelled his ongoing European tour to pay his last respect to the deceased.
Police have been stationed at the party’s headquarters in Accra to forestall any attack by angry party followers, as some have threatened a demonstration to demand the removal of the National Chairman Paul Afoko, for his alleged role in the murky incident.
Also in the Upper East Region, police and military personnel have been placed at vantage points to maintain law and order.
The party’s Flagbearer and other leading members have asked party supporters to remain calm whiles the police investigates the matter.
Meanwhile the police homicide unit from Accra, are in the Upper East Region to investigate the matter as one suspect, Gregory Afoko, a brother to the National NPP Chairman, Paul Afoko, is in the grips of the police for his alleged role in the acid-attack.
