Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who questioned economic competence of the late former vice president Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur in the run-up to the 2016 elections, has been extolling the attributes of the economist. In a tweet to commiserate with the family of Mr. Amissah-Arthur and the National Democratic Congress which he was a member, Dr. Bawumia described the late former vice president as a “civil” and “first class gentleman”. “He was always civil and can be described as a first class gentleman. My condolences to his family, wife, children, the NDC fraternity, and the entire nation. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace,” Dr. Bawumia tweeted.

Dr. observed Mr. Amissah-Arthur dutifully served Ghana as the both the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and as Vice President. Mr. Amissah-Arthur who served as Ghana’s veep from August 2012 to January 2017 under John Mahama, died Friday morning at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra where he was rushed after he reportedly collapsed while exercising at the Air Force Gym at Burma Camp. Dr. Bawumia was very critical of Mr. Amissah-Arthur, a situation that triggered exchanges between the two in the run-up to the 2016 general election. In September 2016, Mr. Amissah-Arthur rubbished the assessment of Ghana’s economy by Bawumia, then the running mate of Nana Akufo-Addo, suggesting he doesn’t know anything about economics. Prior to that, Dr. Bawumia at a lecture sought to rubbish the record of the John Mahama-led government, which he said was wasteful. But Amissah-Arthur hit back hard at Dr Bawumia who has been described by some as an astute economist. “…You cannot come and say that interest payment has exceeded capital payment, therefore, we have made some mistakes, no!,” he told supporters of his party at the launch of NDC’s eastern zone campaign taskforce in Ashaiman in September 2016. Dr. Bawumia then provided 170 statements which he said were questions he was demanding answers for from Mr. Amissah-Arthur following a declaration by the former veep that, Bawumia lied at his “Real state of the economy”.
