Swearing-in ceremony of Commission of Inquiry[/caption] The acting President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Friday inaugurated the three-member Commission of Inquiry set up by the government to dig into the violence which occurred on Thursday, January 31, during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. Former Commissioner of CHRAJ Justice Emile Short, Prof. Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu and a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Patrick K. Acheampong, were Wednesday appointed to among other things “make a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of, and establish the facts leading to, the events and associated violence”.
At a swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House, the Vice President expressed confidence in the credibility of the members of the Commission. “I don’t think anyone who can really question the integrity of the people who are here constituting the commission,” he said. He assured the Commission the government will make available all that is required for them to do an uninterrupted job, reminding them of the deadline they have to meet. “We know that the terms of reference say that you complete this work in a month and that’s why we are quickly getting on the move. I think all the necessary arrangements and logistics will be provided to make sure your work proceeds impartially,” the vice president assured. Chairman of the Commission Justice Emile Short, on his part, called on Ghanaians to cooperate with them in the discharge of the mandate reposed in them by the government. “We will like to urge all and sundry to give us all the support that we would need so that we can find credible and lasting solutions to the phenomenon of electoral violence and vigilante groups,” he said.
