The people of Bawku in the Upper East Region have been schooled on the activities of terrorists as Ghana’s terror alert is raised on the back of the arrest of two armed Burkinabes in the region. Tibila Desire Biligo was arrested last week in a Catholic Church with a foreign pistol loaded with two rounds of ammunition, while another person was arrested later on Wednesday with a locally manufactured pistol with several rounds of ammunition. Both arrests were made at Hamille, Ghana’s border town with Burkina Faso. Recent attacks in neighbouring Burkina Faso have caused Ghana to tighten its security to prevent similar attacks in the country. Joint security agencies in Bawku have on the back of these developments been sensitizing the people in the area on the strategies and activities of terrorists. On Tuesday, the security agencies assembled market women, business managers, chiefs, transport operators, hotel managers and churches in Bawku to educate them on how terrorists operate. The Bawku Municipal Police commander, Chief Supt.  John Kusorkbo, mentioned churches, market places, sports stadia, transport infrastructure and shopping centres among others as the areas usually targeted by terrorists. He thus asked all and sundry to be each other’s keeper, and report strange persons and their activities to the security agencies for the necessary action to be taken. The police particularly asked transport operators to check their passengers properly before allowing them into their vehicles. Chairman of Ghana Private Roads Transport Union in Bawku, Naba Abugri Mahamudu, called on the Bawku Municipal Assembly to provide lighting system at their lorry station. He noted their stations have been in darkness for some years now, adding the provision of a lighting system will help them to check passengers and their activities in order to protect lives.
