The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Asokwa Municipal of the Ashanti Region is calling on corporate Ghana, individuals and other businesses to come to their aid especially with financial and logistical support.
Asokwa Municipal Director for the Commission Tweneboah Kodua explained the appeal has been necessitated due to the prevailing toll logistical and financial constraints are having on their day-to-day operations.
He further explained that “the Commission’s core mandate which is to promote and sustain democracy and inculcate in the Ghanaian citizenry, the awareness of their rights and obligations, through civic education is heavily restricted by unavailability of vehicles and inadequate funds for his office to operate in the Municipal”.
Mr Tweneboah was speaking exclusively in an interview on Akoma FM’s current affairs and political show Ghanakoma last week.
He extended an appeal to factories, companies and businesses within the Asokwa Municipality to come to the Commission’s aid.
He requested urgently that “we don’t have a vehicle or pickup truck to move within the municipality to engage citizens and educate them on their civic rights so anytime we want to make rounds we write to the Assembly who is already under resourced to release their vehicles to us. So, we really need a dedicated vehicle to assist us carry out our constitutional mandate”.
The Asokwa Municipal is flagged as the industrial hub of Kumasi, playing host to a number of industries and businesses within the enclave.
Industries such as Coca Cola Bottling Company, Logs and Lumber Limited (LLL), Guinness Ghana Ltd, Kumasi Abatoir Fan Milk Ghana Ltd and a number of businesses.
When asked by the sit-in host JB if the Commission has formally written to such businesses within the industrial hub for assistance, he answered thus: “Although several requests have been made but it has proven futile, I am once again taking advantage of this your great platform to businesses and individuals who have Ghana at heart to come to support us.
“We can’t continuously put all our burdens on government so we have to collectively push the democratic agenda of the NCCE.”
The Asokwa Municipal Director for NCCE, Tweneboah Kodua, among other topical issues, elaborated the need for Ghanaians to understand the Constitution Day, which is a statutory public holiday observed on January 7 every year and urged citizens to imbibe in them the culture of tolerance and patriotism to ensure sustainable development.
