The Ashanti Command of the Ghana National Fire Service says it will strictly enforce fire safety laws as part of its activities to avert preventable fire outbreaks in the region. Regional Fire Commander, DCFO Semekor Fiadzo, says effective March 2017, his outfit will ensure individuals and institutions violating fire safety laws are penalised. The Ashanti region has recorded significant reduction in fire cases since the beginning of this year compared to the same period in 2016. The region recorded 339 fire incidents in January 2016, but the figure reduced to 142 within the same period this year. But the regional fire command is intensifying public education on fire safety. “As part of our core mandate to prevent undesired fires, it is also our responsibility to educate the public on how to prevent fires from occurring by sensitising them on fire safety measures”, DCFO Fiadzo stressed. He said the regional command will be strict in enforcing fire safety laws after educating the public. “We have resolved to enforce the fire safety law (L.I 1724) to the latter after this awareness creation. Three weeks from now we are going to be ruthless irrespective of who you are once you are not fire safety compliance”, he warned.Meanwhile, the command has embarked on a public sensitization campaign in Kumasi as part of its fire safety education week. The exercise involved distribution of fire education materials to drivers and commercial property owners within the central business district. Personnel from the regional fire command marched through the principal streets of Kumasi to create awareness and educate the public on the dangers of fires and how to prevent undesired fires from occuring to save lives and properties.
