Speaking at press conference on the Electoral Commissions’ decision not to compile a new voters’ register for 2016, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia indicated that the falsehood perpetrated by the NPP could have been calamitous for the country.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia further indicated that due to the “falsehood” by the NPP over the issue, some pro NPP groups have threatened a series of actions which can cause fear and panic.
His comments come on the back of the decision by pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance that it would stage demonstrations to register their displeasure over the EC’s decision not to compile a new register although there is enough evidence that the register is faulty.
The electoral commission after receiving a report from a five (5) member committee it set up to review proposals on Ghana’s register, concluded based on the committee’s recommendations that Ghana does not need a new voters register going into 2016.
The EC however acknowledged that the current register is laden with anomalies and should be cleaned. The EC further indicated that a collective effort is needed by all stakeholders including the political parties to help in the cleansing on the register.
The New Patriotic Party led by its vice presidential candidate, Dr. Bawumia raised red flags about the voters register and called for the compilation of an entirely new register.
The governing National Democratic Congress rubbished the claims by the opposition and asked that if there are anomalies with the register, it should be audited and not thrown away entirely.
Whereas the NPP has questioned the final decision by the EC, the NDC on the other hand has welcomed it.
