The anti-retroviral medications which were in short supply have arrived at the Tema Harbour and cleared.

Distribution to the health facilities has begun, the Ministry of Health said.

For months the country had dealt with a shortage of crucial anti-retroviral medications, increasing the risk of complications in health conditions for Persons Living with HIV.

Members of the Ghana Network of Persons Living with HIV (NAP+ Ghana) report their inability to access the Abacavir Lamivudine Regimen which is essential for viral suppression, maintaining health, and reducing new infections.

The shortage of the drugs left many in a state of worry increasing demands for its immediate attention.

The Ministry of Health assured of the clearance of the drugs from the port by Friday, October 13 thereby dispelling reports that accused it of refusing to give a waiver for clearance.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Isaac Ofei Baah, the drugs should get to the various distribution centres across the country is few days.

‘‘We want the general public to know that the ministry has cleared the anti-retroviral medications which delayed at the Tema port. The distribution of the medication to all affected facilities has begun in earnest and the ministry is working in close collaboration with the Ghana Supply Commission to ensure seamless clearance of such drugs and related ones in future,’’ he said

The Ghana Health Service which is the distribution agency has confirmed receipt of the consignment at its cold room.
