Private legal practitioner, Kwame Adofo argues that incarcerating gay individuals will not decrease the prevalence of the practice.
He said it will rather provide a conducive environment for its perpetuation.
According to Mr Adofo, these persons are best left out of jail as their presence in prison only present Ghana with unintended consequences.
Elaborating on this, he mentioned that inmates, upon release, leave behind collateral damage as they often return to society, “marry, and continue their lives”, inadvertently fostering a cycle of homosexuality within correctional facilities.

“Imagine placing a wealthy gay individual in prison, it essentially grants them a platform to influence vulnerable/hungry inmates.”
Mr Adofo further contends that the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill lacks foresight. He made his assertions on Yen Nsempa with Nana Yaa Brefo and Isaac Ekow JB on Onua FM on February 29.
The lawyer added that insufficient deliberation preceded the bill’s enactment.
“If you think through critically there is no wisdom in this bill that has been passed.
“There wasn’t enough thought process invested into passing this bill.
“This bill is a self-defeating bill, it should never have been passed, it should never have even been brought to parliament to end up being passed, it’s just wrong, we’re multiplying gay people in our community,” he stated.
This comes at the back of Ghana’s Parliament passing the anti-LGBTQI Bill after successfully taking it through all three reading stages.
The third reading of the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill was done on Wednesday, February 28.
