The Ministry for Information has stated that a caseworker has been assigned to the case of an alleged child marriage between 63-year-old Nungua Gbornu Wulomo and 16-year-old Naa Okromo in Nungua.

The 16-year-old Naa Okromo was ‘wedded’ to 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, in a customary marriage ceremony on Saturday, March 30.

The customary ceremony has since sparked public outcry as calls have intensified for state institutions to intervene.

According to the Information Ministry, the case worker will, amongst other things, ensure that all protocols are adhered to in the protection of the child.

“One case worker has been assigned to the case to, among other things, ensure that all protocols regarding the maximum protection of the child are strictly adhered to,” the Ministry said in a statement dated Friday, April 5.

“The Social Welfare Department under the Gender Ministry has made available counseling and other resources, including the provision of a medical doctor and two caregivers to ensure the wellbeing of the child,” it added.

It further revealed that the 63-year-old Gbornu Wulomo has been questioned by the Ghana Police Service, and a statement was taken from him.

“Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has taken a statement from the Gborbu Wulormor Shitse in the presence of his lawyer. Additionally, statements have been taken from the child’s parents to assist in investigations.”

The Ministry therefore reiterated the government’s commitment to support the Ghana Police Service and all relevant stakeholders in the ongoing investigations into the alleged child marriage.
