Akufo-Addo urged to call appointees to order

A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Bossman Asare, wants the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to call his appointees who show signs of intolerance to order. This comes in the wake of a melee between a Deputy Trades and Industry Minister, Carlos Ahenkorah, and North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa outside Parliament on Tuesday. Mr Ahenkorah, who is also MP for Tema West Constituency, has been heavily criticized over his attack on Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa. Mr. Ahenkorah was very unhappy over accusations that the Trade Ministry charged expatriates between $25, 000 and $100, 000 to offer them seats close to the president at an awards ceremony. In an interview on 3FM on Wednesday, Dr. Bossman Asare indicated that the near brawl between the two MPs is a sign of general lack of respect amongst politicians in the country. He added that there seem to be a “fundamental problem” with the nature of politics in the country. “It’s like when we are in the Majority we tend not to give respect to those on the other side. “I do expect that once you are a senior public officer as [Carlos Ahenkorah] is a deputy minister, you should be able to exercise some restraints especially when you are even being provoked to a certain extent.” Dr Asare further admonished that, in his view, he thinks President Akufo-Addo should be able to privately send a signal to his appointees to re-echo to them that “they are senior public officials and that how they conduct themselves is very important”.
