Leader of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama will head the newly formed Political Committee of the party.

Among members of the Committee are Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Former National Organiser Yaw Boateng Gyan and Ekwow Spio Garbrah.

The Committee is one of eight inaugurated by the party on Tuesday, May 12 and Wednesday, May 13 in its march towards retaining power in 2016.

Members of the committees are to perform specific roles as defined by the party’s constitution.

Some of the committees have membership exceeding 20.

“If you have a 30-member committee and you cannot get 10 members meeting, any decision they take is not valid,” noted the General Secretary.

“So instead of leaving your names there to be affecting our quorum, we will decide to delete them and if we end up with seven members, they will do the work.”

The committees were inaugurated by the party’s leader, Mr Mahama, who is also President of Ghana.

“We have always argued about the size of the committees and I have always held the view that big committees are very unwieldy and very difficult to be successful,” remarked President Mahama.

“But the argument too is that the bigger the committee, the more likely you are to always have a quorum when you meet. So as many of you who can attend and make your services available to the party, we will be happy to do that.”

The committees are Political, Legal, Disaciplinary and Complaint and Conflict Resolution.

The rest are Elections, Communications, Social Services and Economic and Finance
