The Africa Centre of International Criminal Justice (ACICJ) has on Thursday, September 30, opened a two-day training programme on International Criminal Law and Justice for law students, lawyers, judges and persons with special interest in the subject.
The programme, held at the Moot Court of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Law Faculty, is one of the many programmes the centre organises in its quest to fight impunity at the global, regional and national levels through education and the dissemination of accurate information regarding the International Criminal Law and Justice regime generally, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) in particular.
Director at the ACICJ, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Budu said it is about time Ghanaians took keen interest in International Criminal Law due its relevance.
“The idea is that this is an area of law that is important because when you look at the history of international criminal law, you would realise we have only been reactionary in bringing to book perpetrators of the most serious crimes only after they have occurred, then you can begin to appreciate why international criminal law is important”, he said.
Like previous programmess organised by the centre, this year’s is facilitated by top officials of the ICC and other International Criminal Law experts from Africa.
Senior Trial Lawyer at the ICC, Jean-Jacques Badibanga, Director of Programmes at the Institute of Human Rights and Development in Africa, Edmund Foley and International Cooperation Adviser, Officer of the Prosecutor- ICC, Dahirou Sant-Anna, are among the facilitators for the two-day training.
Day one of the programme focuses on the history of International Criminal Law and Justice, the legal basis or justification for the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and processing a case before the ICC.
Day two will look at the role and rights of parties before the ICC, the role of victims in proceedings before the ICC and the role and contribution of the Trust Fund for families, Human Rights, Humanitarian law among others.
Participants, most of whom are law students from the various Faculties of Law across the country and the Ghana School of Law (GSL) are looking forward to having an educative encounter.
