A British media and hospitality company, Time Out, has ranked three African cities among the best 50 cities to visit globally in 2024.
The three African cities include; Accra in Ghana, Lagos in Nigeria and Cape Town in South Africa.
Time Out is a renowned company known for its guides and magazines.
South Africa’s Cape Town secured the second spot in the list while Lagos and Accra ranked 19th and 44th respectively.
Time Out arrived at this conclusion after conducting a survey of more than 20,000 city dwellers around the world, along with its network of editors.
Food quality and affordability, cultural richness, vibrant nightlife, the overall emotional impact of the city, community spirit, access to green spaces, historical sites amongst others were the criteria used to evaluate the cities.
America’s New York City was ranked the top spot on the list, with Vancouver in Canada securing the 50th position. According to Time Out, it worked with Potentia Insight, a research company, to strengthen the survey’s quality.
Occupied with table Mountain and neatly-marked walking trails together with its peninsula which is decorated by beautiful and impressive beaches, South Africa’s Cape Town smitten so easily.
In the District Six Museum and on Robben Island you’ll get to grip the country’s turbulent history, while the colourful homes of Bo-Kaap are an invitation to discover the city’s vibrant Cape Malay community.
100 per cent of locals say the city is beautiful and that it made them happy, while Cape Town’s culture scene ranked highest in the world for its quality.
According to Time Out, whether you’re a staunch mainlander or from Lekki, there’s something for everyone in Lagos, Africa’s most populous city. The luxurious Victoria Island presents visitors with its swanky resorts, food haunts, and nightlife. Maple Lagos in Lekki, Kuti’s Bistro in Ikeja, ‘Obi’s House’ and Hard Rock Cafe Lagos are just a few of the places where you can experience real enjoyment.
When it comes to the standard of living, Lagos has a lot going for it – 96 per cent of locals are happy, 98 per cent would call Lagos beautiful and the city got a 92 per cent friendliness rating, the magazine says.
With over 4 million people, Accra is nothing if not lively. New bars, restaurants and galleries continue to spring up and find their place in the rhythm of bustling markets, honking motorists and raving nightlife.
Accra is positively humming with exciting new ventures across music, nightlife and the arts. Creative dining space Palm Moments, Accra’s Imullar Sound System, and Thursday Lates are vents you don’t want to miss.
Accra scored a stunning 100 per cent happiness score, with the same percentage of locals saying the seaside city is beautiful to see.
