Ablekuma North residents decry poor drainage system, flood menace

Concerned residents of Jar love-down in the ‘Been-tu’ Electoral Area of Ablekuma North Assembly have decried the poor drainage system which they said often leads to flooding in the area.

A group of residents in the area held a protest demanding construction of a storm drain and a bridge to curb flooding.

They have expressed strong resentment over the laid-back approach of the government towards their dilemma are threatening that they will not vote in the upcoming general elections if the drainage system is not fixed.

The residents have complained that the area gets completely flooded even during little rainfall, causing inconvenience to the locals.

Our correspondent who visited the area noticed that the drainage was filled with water and dirt, and that houses situated along the drain were at the verge of collapsing.

Leader of the concerned group, Simon Akpo on the sidelines alleged that the Municipal Chief Executive of Ablekuma North and the Member of Parliament have failed to address the issue despite being approached a number of times.

He said the authorities have not even bothered to visit the area anymore to take stock of the hardship locals are facing.

“We are always told that work on the bridge and storm drain in the area cannot be started until the central government raises enough funds for the project “.

Meanwhile, several people have lost their lives as well as properties as a result of floods anytime it rains.

Mr. Akpo intensified calls on the government to fix the drainage system, otherwise they will prevent officials of the Electoral Commission to conduct elections in the area henceforth.
