The Ashanti Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is up in arms against the police after a planned demonstration against the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) was stopped. The NDC had planned the demonstration against the limited registration exercise scheduled to take off on Friday, June 7. The demonstration was scheduled to be held on Monday, June 3. But reports say the Ashanti Regional Police Command secured a court injunction last Friday to stop the opposition party from the protest march. At a press conference on Monday, regional NDC organizer Isham Alhassan said the police’s excuse was “weird”. According to him, the police said they would be preparing officers for Wednesday’s Eid-ul-Fitr; therefore, making it impossible to have men to offer protection for the protesters. On the substantive issue of opposition to the EC’s exercise, Mr Alhassan said the arrangement by elections-management body in the Region is a breach against its own regulations. “Ladies and gentlemen, in addition to the 33 district office online registration centers of the Electoral Commission in the Ashanti Region, the EC has created an additional 183 offline centers in 132 electoral areas across 20 Constituencies, these areas they consider to be DIFFICULT to access. “This new effort is to satisfy in part, Regulation 2, Sub-regulation 2 (b) of CI 91 that enjoins the EC to ensure that registration centers are accessible to prospective applicants. “In determining which areas are DIFFICULT to access, the Electoral Commission did not consult the political parties.” Source: 3news.com|Ghana]]>
