Beyond the formation of a community watchdog committee to help reduce crime at Ayigya Zango in the Oforikrom municipality in the Ashanti Region, there were still calls for illuminating the area to further improve security.

The absence of street lights in some parts of the community has led to security concerns.

Residents complained of petty crimes in areas where there is darkness.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, as part of its social responsibilities towards its catchment communities, has presented 50 pieces of LED streetlights to the Ayigya Zango communities.

The intervention is in response to a request made by the assemblyman of the area to the university management.

“This timely support will not only brighten the dark corners of the area but improve security as well. Our target is to reduce crime to the barest minimum since there is no zero-crime community. We thank the management of KNUST for the intervention”, Assemblyman for Ayigya Zango, Issaka Ali Sambo said.

Sarkin Zango for the area, Alhaji Mohammed Bashir was hopeful the fixing of the streetlights would improve security in the area.

“Crime advances in dark areas so brightening all corners of the area will definitely reduce it since no one wants to be seen engaging in crime acts. We are grateful to the Vice Chancellor of KNUST and the assemblyman of the area for this”.
