Of the 49 women who put themselves out to be elected electoral committee and assembly members, only 9 of them won as against the previous figure of 23 women out of 70 women who contested in that elections, Community Development and Advocacy Centre (CODAC) has revealed.
According to CODAC, the number of women elected to the municipal and district assemblies in the Upper East Region keeps on dwindling.
It said a total of 969 individuals contested in 336 electoral areas of the 13 districts in the Upper East region, noting that the male contestants won 327 of the slots.
At a day’s conference to review the poor performance of women in the just ended elections in Bolgatanga, stakeholders claim although the elections are non-partisan, some political parties went underground and campaigned for people who have an interest in their parties.
The perception of that women cannot lead men, the stakeholders said, also contributed to the poor showing of women in the elections, noting that most women campaigned for the male contestants.
Programs manager of CODAC, Seidu Musah Akugri said his outfit has profiled some competent women who are capable of leading their various communities if appointed. He pledged to submit a list of competent women to the various assemblies for nominations if the need be.
