The Ghana Armed Forces has deployed an extra 400 military officers to intensify the fight against illegal mining on river bodies.

In a statement signed by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, this constitutes the second phase of Operation Halt, aimed at removing all persons and logistics involved in mining on water bodies.

The new phase of the Operation will focus on the tributaries of the Pra River which have also been significantly affected by activities of illegal miners.

The Ghana Armed Forces has also started armed patrols along the Pra River, the statement added.

Late in April, 200 soldiers were deployed to galamsey-prone areas as part of the renewed national fight against galamsey.
