4 top officials of Korle-Bu dismissed over missing GHc946,000

Ghana’s leading health facility, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, has dismissed four of its top officials over a financial scandal that hit the hospital’s pharmacy last year.

The affected persons are Elizabeth Bruce, Director of Pharmacy, Eric Kwaku Kyei, Principal Pharmacist/ Pharmacy Manager, Augustina Dankyi, Pharmacy Accountant and Daniel Eledi, Stores Assistant.

The hospital took the action following a forensic audit commissioned by the Ministry of Health in 2014 revealed that an amount of Gh₵946,574.29 could not be accounted for from sales and revenue at the 24- Hour Pharmacy of the hospital.

A statement issued by the hospital Thursday said the board and management met on Wednesday June 17, and took the decision to dismiss them.

TERMINATION OF APPOINTMENTS

RELEASE: IMMEDIATE

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Board has decided to terminate with immediate effect the  appointment of the following due to gross incompetence and dereliction of duty in the management and day-today operations of the 24-Hour Pharmacy:

1.Mrs Elizabeth Bruce, Director of Pharmacy and also Director of 24-Hour Pharmacy
2.Mr Eric Kwaku Kyei, Principal Pharmacist/ Pharmacy Manager
3.Mrs Augustina Dankyi, Pharmacy Accountant
4.Mr Daniel Eledi, Stores Assistant

Following a forensic audit commissioned by the Ministry of Health last year which established  that an amount of Gh₵946,574.29 could not be accounted for from sales revenue at the 24-Hour Pharmacy, an administrative enquiry commissioned by the Board subsequently established the culpability of the four individuals in respect of the unaccounted for amount.

The Board, thus, convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 and decided to terminate the appointment of the above – mentioned four individuals.

The Board’s  decision  is without prejudice to the ongoing criminal investigations being carried out by the Economic and  Organized Crime Organization in respect of the  unaccounted for funds.

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Board wishes to inform the staff
and  all  other stakeholders  that it remains committed to ensure that the assets of  the hospital are protected.

The Board in exercising its mandate to ensure good governance, transparency and accountability in the management of the hospital has directed management to carry out  relevant internal processes and procedures on all other operations of Korle Bu with the view  of putting in place robust systems and processes to forestall future such occurrences.
