Twenty-eight people were burnt beyond recognition from an accident involving a Yutong bus and a Mercedes Sprinter on the Kintampo highway of the Bono East Region.

The Yutong bus was from Bawku to Kumasi while the Mercedes Sprinter was from Kumasi to the northern part of the country.

Six of the victims who survived the accident have been rushed to the Kintampo Government Hospital for medical care.

The accident occurred in a head-on collision at around 3:30am Monday on the Kintampo to Gulumpe stretch of the road.

The Kintampo Divisional Police Crime Officer, DSP Prosper Gbagbo, who revealed this to Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Monday said “the Yutong bus had 11 passengers on board from Bawku while the Sprinter bus had 23 passengers on board”.

He explained that “they got to a section of the highway which was two minutes drive from Dawadawa Number. The Yutong collided with a sprinter bus with 23 passengers”.

“The sprinter caught fire and all the passengers on board [got] burnt beyond recognition but six people on the Yuntong were able to escape,” he explained.

“The Sprinter bus with a registration AS 1801-18 was from Kumasi to the north but we cannot get the registration of the other because we are yet to pull the sprinter because it’s a head-on collision,” DSP Gbagbo said.

The crime officer told Yen Sempa host Bright Kwasi Asempa that “one of the trapped victims was a police officer stationed at Suhum and the police man also died”.
