President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to Ghanains to remain united especially this year as the country goes to the polls on December 7.
Ahead of the elections, the president warned against the dissemination of fake news.
Speaking during this year’s Eid celebrations held at the Black Star Square in Accra on Thursday, April 11, President Akufo-Addo also warned against people seeking to exploit the differences of religion and ethnicity to foment division.
“We are in an election year and in election years, there is a tendency for self-seeking people to exploit our differences of religion and ethnicity to foment division to promote narrow and parochial sectarian and political agendas.
“In an age of information and new media, which also offers people a wide degree of anonymity, we should be careful about the spread of misinformation and disinformation, especially when such misinformation and disinformation destroy the hard-earned reputation of people,” he said.
In a subsequent post on his Facebook page, he said “On Thursday, 11th April, 2024, I joined the Muslim Ummah and their leadership at the Independence Square in Accra, to observe Eid-ul-Fitr prayers and give thanks to the almighty Allah for guiding the Muslim Ummah, not just in Ghana but also throughout the world, to a successful end of the Holy month of Ramadan.
“I urged the Muslim Ummah to carry the spirit of sacrifice, fellow feeling, commitment to ethical living, love of family and nation, and above all, good consciousness beyond Ramadan and continue to continue to promote religious harmony and coexistence, in line with the true essence of Islam, which means peace and submission to the will of Allah.”
