A bus carrying 12 journalists in the Western Region where they covered President John Dramani Mahama was Monday afternoon involved in an accident, leaving one critically injured.

The journalists were returning to their base in Takoradi when the accident occurred at a town called Biaho in the Nzema East area; about an hour drive from Takoradi.

The accident happened when the bus said to belong to the Regional Coordinating Council, attempted to join President Mahama’s convoy causing another car in the convoy to  hit the bus from behind.

The bus veered off the road and crashed into another car that was parked on the shoulders of the road before stopping, Daniel Dadzie, one of the journalists who was onboard the bus told TV3’s News 360

According to him, after the assignment, their bus took the lead and when they got to scene where the accident happened, they saw the President’s convoy approaching hence the journalists asked the driver to park for the convoy to pass.

But he said after a couple of the cars in the convoy had passed, “he[driver] tried to enter the convoy when there were still a number of speeding cars behind him. He tried making his way into the convoy and one of the cars unfortunately hit us from behind.

“We veered off the road and hit another car that was parked on the side of the road…When I got down, I was in shock and I realized that one of my colleagues was kneeling down on the side of the road. He was holding his head and I’m told he was bleeding at the time he was taken from the bus,” Mr. Dadzie who works with Sky TV in Takoradi narrated.

Asked whether the driver is a convoy driver, he said the conversation he had with the driver during the journey suggests he is a “hired driver”

The critically injured, Samuel Acquah Swanzy, said to be a correspondent for the Accra-based radio station Citi FM, has since been rushed to the hospital.
