Lab scientists declare indefinite nationwide strike

Members of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) across the country have declared an indefinite strike with effect from Thursday, May 27.

This follows days of an industrial action by members at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The members at KATH had embarked on a sit-down strike after management of the foremost hospital in the Ashanti Region posted two physicians to the Haematology Unit without recourse to GAMLS.

After their demands were not met, despite assurances from the Ministry of Health, GAMLS members have escalated the strike action to all health facilities across the country.

“We will not resume work until management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) remove the two Physicians (Haematologists) from the Laboratory (Haematology) Unit,” the release announcing the strike said.

“We direct all our members in the Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana, University Hospitals and all other health institutions to completely stay out of work from [Thursday] until further notice.”

They have assured members of “complete protection”.

“Any form of maltreatment meted out to any member of GAMLS-Ashanti should be reported to the regional executives for further actions.”
