A lotto agent who has been importing and issuing unauthorised electricity meters to some residents of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region has been picked up by the Police.
A total of 25 illegal meters were retrieved from Bismark Kyeremanteng at Kronum when he was arrested
On April 19, 2017, a team of Electricity Company of Ghana officials detected a customer at Kumasi Abbatoir is using a meter that did not fall in the category ECG certified meters.
Upon interrogation, he directed the team to one Kyeremanteng, as the source of the said meter, following which the ECG officials and the Police went to the house of Kyeremanteng to arrest him.
Of the 28 meters retrieved from him, 25 were unkown while the three were ECG certified meters.
Kyeremanteng is alleged to have issued a number of the Ciemans branded meters to residents in Kronum and the Kumasi Abbatoir at a cost of 250 cedis.
He is to be processed for court on May 23, 2017.
The Revenue Protection Unit of ECG expects the outcome of the case to serve as a deterrent to persons importing and installing unknown meters in the country.
Public Relations Manager of ECG in Ashanti Region, Erasmus Baidoo, said they are bent on fishing out all those who have imported unknown meters into the country.
He noted the company has gathered information that the suspect has been in the business of importing and installing unknown meters for the past two years.
The company has advised the public to walk to ECG offices whenever they are in need of meters to avoid being duped by unscrupulous persons.
