The Sandbox Beach and the La Poly Clinic have partnered to organize a free breast screening exercise for members of the La community.
The event, which is part of the corporate social responsibility of the former, saw scores of people troop in to have their breast screened.
Chief Executive Officer of Group Sebastian, owners of the Sandbox Beach Club, Sarah Mary Adetola said: “Since we are located in La, it was important that we came together to help the community.
“It’s important for us to engage the community in which we are housed. We hope to share knowledge about this disease since early detection is important. We will be supporting those who will get diagnosed with the disease one way or another.”
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide with nearly 1.7 million new cases worldwide.
Public Health Nurse at the La Poly clinic Linda Tetteh said “it is very important that breast cancer screening is done for the community”.
“Due to the cost of checking breast cancer and cancer-related diseases, it’s a very proper initiative by the Sandbox Beach. I would urge more civil society organisations to help organize these free screening exercises for people since the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) does not cover cancer checks.”
According to some of the participants, it was a privilege to get the opportunity to check their breasts.
Amongst the people that thronged the event to check their breast was a 56-year-old man.
He explained his decision to get checked.
“I’ve heard of breast cancer on radio and television, so when I heard that the Sandbox [Beach] people were organizing I decided to come and check. I would advise all my fellow men to come and check.”
The month of October is celebrated worldwide as breast cancer month.
The month is used to educate and sensitize individuals about the disease.
