After days of steady reduction in the active cases of coronavirus in Ghana, the situation is turning back again.

There has been a sharp increase in the active cases from the latest case count by the Ghana Health Service.

The figure has increased from 1,832 to 1,939 as captured in the update released on Sunday, August 16.

It comes ahead of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s 15th update to the nation later in the day.

The president had expressed contentment with the active cases in his last update on Sunday, July 26, saying this is what informs his government’s decision in the easing of restrictions.

He said the deaths have been relatively low.

“Our hospitalisation and death rates have, consistently, been very low, some of the lowest in Africa and in the world,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

“The Ghanaian people, mercifully, are not dying of the virus in the hundreds and thousands that were earlier anticipated and predicted, and that are being seen on a daily basis in some other countries.

“The behaviour of this virus has baffled the experts and defied most predictions, but five months on, we can say that we are witnessing a much milder manifestation of the virus in the country, than was initially feared.”

From the latest update, the deaths are at 231.

The total number of cumulative cases is 42,532 with the recoveries-cum-discharges at 40,362.

With the current active cases, 18 are in severe conditions while six are in critical conditions.

Three are surviving on ventilators.
