After confirming Ghana’s total case count at 5,408 on Wednesday, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) says 122 more persons have been infected with the deadly coronavirus disease.

The Head of Public Health of the Service, Dr Badu Sarkodie, announced on Thursday, May 14 at the Ministry of Information’s bi-weekly press update that the total number of infections has risen to 5,530.

The number of recoveries has jumped to 674. The number of deaths also remains 24.

Out of the new infections, 57 were recorded in the Greater Accra Region, whose total tally is now 4,204.

Sixty-two were recorded in the Ashanti Region, bringing the total number in that region to 788.

There have been concerns over the recent spike in cases in the two regions – precisely in Obuasi and Tema.

At the briefing, Minister of Health Kwaku Agyemang-Manu said a team of contract tracers as well as health officials including the Director-General of GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, is headed to those two towns to investigate the recent jump in  cases.

“We believe we can find the antidote to the spread of the disease in these locations,” he said.

He charged Ghanaians to continue to observe the safety protocols, particularly at crowded locations, in order to slow the spread of the disease.

He said the disease has come to stay with us and it is important daily activities are tweaked in order to go about them safely.

Ghana first recorded its two cases of the disease on Thursday, March 12.

After two months, the active cases being managed and treated now are 4,832.
