One would expect that a health facility must have a serene and healthy environment that provides relief to its visitors and patients. But the story at Atua Government Hospital is rather the opposite.
The Atua Government Hospital which was once the ‘saviour’ health facility in the Lower Manya Krobo municipality and its neighbouring communities has nothing to boast of in its current state.
The unhygienic nature, coupled with its deteriorating structures have become a worry to clients, defeating its vision of making the place hope for patients and clients who patronize the facility.
It is currently in need of modern facilities for quality healthcare delivery.
Sanitary conditions are not good enough for workers, patients and visitors.
The 24-hour service government hospital has its compound covered by weeds.
The Out Patient Department (OPD) is occupied by old, worn-out pews, chairs, tables, buckets and medical items.
The emergency and maternity wards are all bedevilled with challenges.
Amidst other unhygienic situations at various wards, parts of the ceiling are caving in, while walls are cracked and mouldy.
Parts of the facility flood anytime it rains.
One cannot enter the urinal facilities without being ‘choked’ with stench.
Meanwhile, sources tell us the facility has employed cleaners who are to ensure a clean environment.
The Atua government, established in 1977, has over the years provided healthcare services to the people of Odumase-Krobo, within the Yilo Krobo District and its environs in the eastern region.
It was one of the centres for HIV/AIDS treatment and recently converted its male ward to a covid-19 isolation Centre.
