Ghana’s longest serving finance minister and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Kwesi Botchwey, has explained why he did not partner John Mahama as his running mate for the upcoming elections.
Even though the respected economist was tipped to be one of the ideal persons for the NDC’s vice presidential candidate ticket, it eventually went to former education minister, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
Asked if it was the case that he was approached but declined to avail himself for the position, Prof Kwesi Botwey said that is far from it.
“No, I didn’t reject it [offer to be running mate], there is a time for everything, every party must forge a generational transition so that the older ones step back and give guidance and support”, he explained.
He expressed optimism in the pair of John Dramani Mahama and Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang that they will bring victory to the party, while dismissing assertions that the vice presidential slot is a preserve of economists.
According to Prof. Botwey, the NDC vice presidential candidate is “ready and capable” and that her nomination “opens a new chapter in our politics”.
He spoke in an exclusive interview with Media General’s parliamentary correspondent, Komla Klutse, shortly after the outdooring of Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang at the University of Professional Studies, Accra on Monday.
