President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated categorically that Same-sex marriage will not be legalised in Ghana under his presidency.

He said this at Asante Mampong on Saturday, 27th February 2021, at the installation of the 2nd Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Ghana.

“It will not be under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that same sex marriage will be legalized in Ghana, It will never happen in my time as president,” he said.

His comments follow the raging debate and discussions on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTSI) activities in Ghana.

Former Country Director of Amnesty International Robert Akoto Amoafo for instance has descended heavily on persons whipping up what he describes as hate sentiments against LGBTSI persons, insisting that nowhere in Ghana’s statutes is the orientation criminalized.

“So, when we talk about lesbians, who are lesbians? Do people understand who lesbians are? Do people understand who transgenders are? And what is the definition of these people in our laws?” he asked.

“There is nowhere in the law where lesbians are criminalized.”

Mr Amoako Akoto was contributing to discussions on the rights of LGBTQI persons in Ghana on The Key Points on TV3/3FM Saturday, February 27.
