Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cut short his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region on Fiday, October 2 to commiserate with victims of Thursday’s floods that affected several communities and lives in the West Mamprusi Municipality and donated some relief items as well.

The items include bags of rice, oil, milk, sugar, mosquito nets, plastic buckets, mattresses among others.

In addition, the Vice President supported the affected victims with an amount of GH¢100,000.

According to Dr. Bawumia, he has instructed that 500 bags of maize be purchased to supplement the food brought to the victims by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

He assured the affected victims that government will provide them with zincs and other materials to rebuild their collapsed buildings after the rains subsides.

“By the grace of God, we will do everything possible once the rains stop, we will support the victims to rebuild their houses again for it to be able to withstand future flooding.”

Together with the regional NADMO and the North East Regional Coordinating Council, he conveyed the President’s sympathies to the affected persons.

“Government is very much concerned about the plight of all citizens, particularly in times of grief. It is my prayer that the lives of the victims and the affected communities will come back to normalcy in the shortest possible time,” Dr. Bawumia noted.

Residents of four villages, Gaagbini, Dimia, Tinkaya, and Banawa, woke up on Thursday morning to see their communities totally submerged in floodwaters following massive torrential rains that forced the banks of the Diani dam and the Guabuliga 1V1D project to break.

Thousands of acres of farmlands have been destroyed, while livestock have been carried away by the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, displaced persons in the affected communities are currently lodging temporarily in school blocks and offices of the Assembly.

The regional NADMO director of the North East Region, J.K Alhassan, has confirmed to 3news.com that some 58 homes are completely destroyed and 22 partially damaged, making a total of 80 houses.

Three hundred and eighty-three rooms out of these houses have been affected, leaving 938 people with no place to lay their heads.

The most badly affected community is Gaagbini with close to 15 houses collapsing to the ground.

The situation also caused the main Walewale-Nalerigu road to submerge, leaving a never seen traffic on the busy highway with dozens of travelers and motorists stranded.
