The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has passed a resolution to start impeachment proceedings against National President Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo.

According to UG-UTAG, the demeanour and public utterances of Prof Ofosu Marfo on the Public Universities Bill (PUB) 2020 is contrary to the stance agreed on by members.

“We believe he is not serving the interest of UTAG members in this PUB matter,” the resolution jointly signed by Dr Samuel Kojo Kwofie, the Vice President of UG-UTAG, and Dr Bertha Kwansa-Bentum, the Secretary of UG-UTAG, said.

The decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against Prof Ofosu Marfo was taken at an emergency virtual meeting held on Thursday, June 11.

There has been controversy over the Bill, which is before Parliament’s Select Committee on Education.

According to reports, the UTAG National President and other leaders have given the greenlight for the Bill to be passed into law subject to recommendations proffered by UTAG.

But UG-UTAG says it dissociates from the position of the national officers and insists that the Bill is unconstitutional and will create more problems than it intends to resolve.

This was contained in an earlier resolution passed at the emergency meeting.

“The initial position of UG-UTAG, reflected in the memorandum submitted to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, and which called for the rejection of the PUB on grounds of its unconstitutionality, impracticality and the likelihood that the application of the PUB as law will created more problems than it intends to resolve, remains unchanged.

“The proposed bill does not seek to address any gap in the existing laws governing public universities.

“Instead, the bill wlil allow unnecessary government interference in the affairs of public universities.”
