The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG) has expressed concern about the recent clashes involving resident students of Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall of the premier university.

Several properties were destroyed while some students sustained various degrees of injury on Friday, August 5 when some students of the two Halls clashed.

A bust of John Mensah Sarbah in front of the Hall, named after him, was carried away by the Vandals, as students of Commonwealth Hall are popularly called.

“We condemn in no uncertain terms, these needless clashes that are now threatening to get out of control and are undermining academic peace and freedom,” UG-UTAG stated after an Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, August 16.

Already, sanctions have been meted out to all those found culpable.

While the Hall Master and Senior Tutor of Commonwealth Hall have been relieved of their roles, the Junior Common Room (JCR) Presidents of the two halls have been referred to the Disciplinary Committees for further interrogation.

The sanctions were recommended by the University Council after accepting a report from an investigative committee set up to look into the clashes.

“We would support Management of the University in finding a permanent solution to this recurring problem that creates unnecessary tension in our teaching and learning environment,” UG-UTAG’s statement issued by President Dr Samuel Nkumbaan and Secretary Prof Ransford Gyampo added.

It called on all stakeholders to cooperate with the management of the University “in working to restore calm and peace on campus”.
