Kwesimintsim-based public school St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School has retained their title as, arguably, the best junior high school (JHS) in the Western Region after they won the second edition of Connect FM’s Cowbell Best Brain Quiz Competition.
The finals started on a tense note as competitors from the three participating schools failed to answer most of the questions on literary devices. In the end, defending champions St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School won the first round.
Students of the participating schools, their masters and invited guests were kept on their feet, in the second round, as Nana Yaw Sarpong of Tessark International School answered all major and bonus science questions posed to the school.
With that singular heroism, he was able to move the scores of his school from 30 in Round 1 to 88 in Round 2. Here again, defending champions St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School won, but with a nerve-wracking half mark.
St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School will, in Round 3, demonstrate why they are the champions by putting up a sterling performance to shake off their contenders Tessark International School and St. Peter’s International School.
In the end they scored 122.5, the closest school, Tessark International, had 109 while St. Peter’s International School had 89.
The defending champions failed to impress in the last round as they could answer only 4 out of the 10 questions posed.
Both St. Peter’s International School and Tessark International School outclassed the defending champions with 6 and 5 correct questions respectively. Fortunately, for the defending champions they will count on marks from the previous rounds to propel them to victory.
In the end they won with 130.5 marks. Tessark International School had 119 and St. Peter’s International School had 109.
For their prize, the Champions received a cash prize of GH¢7,000, a laptop each for the contestants and tablet for their facilitators, certificate, medal and products from sponsors. They also get a science clinic from the Youth Bridge Foundation.
The first runner-up, Tessark International School received a cash prize of GH¢4,000, a tablet each for the contestants and their facilitator, certificate, medal and products from sponsors. Second runner-up St. Peter’s International School received a cash prize of GH¢2,000, a tablet each for the contestants and facilitator and products from sponsors.
“Everybody here is excited and understandably so because this year’s competition has been very successful. Right from the start of the competition all through to today that we have ended. If you look at the performances that the school put up, some of the questions you asked yourself whether they will be able to answer and they did. So, it tells you how prepared the schools were,” Station Manager of ConnectFM Nana Osei Asare said
He continued: “It also gives us a challenge because next year will be more competitive. Our understanding is that more schools are willing to join. So, in the quest to bring this competition back next year, we are also going to make sure that everything associated with it, is meticulously planned to sustain the momentum.”

Twenty-six junior high schools from 13 districts in the Western Region participated in the second edition of the Connect Cowbell Best Brains Competition.
The Connect Cowbell Best Brains Competition is sponsored by Cowbell, Top Choco, Kel Kids Toothpaste, Mc Berry Biscuit, Youth Bridge Foundation with support from 7Stars Natural Mineral Water, Ghana Education Service, Fijai Senior High School, St. Johns Senior School and Ghana Secondary Technical School.
