Security expert, Adam Bonaa, has questioned the research which informed the decision of the Government of Ghana to ban the exportation of food to order countries.
The government in response to an imminent food crisis directed that no food be exported to neighbouring countries to ensure food security, the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Yaw Frimpong said in a media interview.
This was on the back of comments made by former president and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2020 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, to the effect that the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs has failed and that the country is could be running into food shortage soon.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture would however not agree to the former president’s assertion. The ministry said described as propagandist Mr Mahama’s remarks and an attempt to detract from his infamous ‘do or die’ comments.
Reacting to the ban on 3FM’s Community Connect, Mr Bonaa told Johnnie Hughes that the decision was in haste and fears it may cause more harm than good.
“I’m not too sure if this directive was well-thought through, I’m not sure whether the security agencies have been involved in a research like this and I’m not sure what research went into this sudden ban on export on certain produce to neighbouring countries”, he said.
“Whoever took that decision, I’m not sure what intel went into it”, he reiterated.
He said if wider consultations were done, the ban, according to him, would not have been “so sudden”. He is concerned that the directives raise some security concerns since its implementation means cutting the livelihood of some people.
Mr Bonaa said the move is likely to trigger reprisals from neighbouring countries, something he fears may cause a food crisis in the country.
This, he also fears may cause citizens to hit the streets.
