The People’s National Convention (PNC) has added its voice to the wide condemnation of the attack of UTV last Saturday night by some irate men said to be members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The men broke into the studios, where the flagship entertainment show ‘United Showbiz’ was being telecast, to accost some of the guests.
Police rushed to the scene and arrested of 16 these attackers.
In a statement issued on Monday, the PNC described the attack as “barbaric” and against the principles of democracy and fundamental rights of citizens to access unbiased and independent news.
“Attacks on the media not only undermine democracy but also hinder the public’s right to be informed about matters of national interest,” the statement signed by First Vice Chairperson Hajia Hajara Ali Musah said.
“We call upon the relevant authorities to fast track its investigation into this incident, identify those behind the perpetrators, and bring them to justice,” it added on Monday.
“It is imperative that steps are taken to ensure the safety of journalists and media personnel, as well as the protection of media outlets, enabling them to carry out their duties without fear of intimidation or violence.”
The opposition party pledged its “solidarity” and “support” behind UTV and its journalists.
“We stand with them in defending their right to provide unbiased news coverage to the public.
“As a political party, we reiterate our commitment to promoting and safeguarding press freedom in our nation.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the rights of journalists, advocate for a free and independent media, and raise public awareness about the importance of a vibrant and uninhibited press.”
The party called on the international community, media organisations and civil society to be collective in condemning the invasion and standing up for media freedom.
“Together, we can ensure that journalists can exercise their rights without interference, ensuring a well-informed and empowered citizenry.”
