The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has descended heavily on the security deployment to Parliament ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of members of the Eighth Parliament and President-elect and his Vice. In a write-up on Tuesday, January 5, the Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee described as “needless, excessive, gestapo and despotic” the deployment to the House. According to him, it is in total breach of the Standing Orders of Parliament. “Let those few service commanders impetuously pursuing misguided instructions be informed that per the Standing Orders of Parliament, they are in contempt of Parliament and shall be in even more trouble if they attempt to arrest or molest any Member of Parliament as we carry out our legitimate constitutional duties,” he wrote. This comes in the wake of a law suit filed against the Minority Leader and some National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs over their march to the headquarters of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) on Tuesday, December 22. None of the charged MPs was present in court on Monday, January 4 when the case was called. Concerns are that the MPs will be rounded up on Tuesday when they attend the session for the State of the Nation address to be delivered by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
