The founding president of IMANI-Africa and governance expert, Franklin Cudjoe, has asserted that the immediate past minister for finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, may still be influential in the last 10 months of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government due to the former minister’s alleged new portfolio.
According to sources available to the 3News’ Political Desk, the former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, is set to be named a Senior Presidential Advisor to President Nana Akufo-Addo on all matters relating to the economy.
He will take up the new mantle following the February 14th ministerial shuffle.
Further reports corroborate this, clarifying that Ken Ofori-Atta’s new portfolio will also see him serve as the president’s special envoy on international investment and the capital markets.
Reacting to the development on TV3’s current affairs programme Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, Feb. 14, Franklin Cudjoe said, “From what has been said, the former finance minister is going to be a special advisor on the economy at the presidency and at the same time will be a special envoy when it comes to international investments and capital markets…so it looks to me that role is quite bigger.”
“I can infer from what it means, essentially, that he probably would have a lot of say when it comes to big-ticket investments that Ghana would be negotiating and, at the same time, maybe advising when it comes to whether we are right to go to the capital markets, and when we do, he [Ken Ofori-Atta] will still play a significant role,” he told Alfred Ocansey.
Mr. Cudjoe further described the new role of the former finance minister as a ‘mafia don’ who will have the final say on important government decisions.

“Without a doubt, this could be like the mafia don because what it essentially means is that at the level of the finance ministry, they can do all the paperwork, but at least it will have Ofori-Atta’s say when it comes to investments or going to the capital market,” he stated.
